About the standard

The EN 61000-3-2 standard refers to harmonic currents caused by electrical and electronic equipment with an input current that is less than or equal to 16A. In addition, the equipment must be intended for connection to public low-voltage networks. The EN 61000-3-2 standard sets clear limits for harmonic currents. All electrical or electronic devices that fall under the EN 61000-3-2 standard are divided into classes A to D. The standard also specifies the measurement of harmonic currents. In addition, specifications are made for measurement. These specifications refer to various details such as the type and frequency of the measurement and the responsibility for the measurement. Furthermore, the test conditions can be divided into general and special test conditions. Which devices fall under the general and which under the special test conditions are regulated in the annex of the standard EN 61000-3-2.

EN 61000-3-2 – Clarifications and test conditions

Clear specifications are made as to which devices are covered by the standard and which devices are not. The standard is not valid for all household appliances. This applies even if the household appliances have a lighting device and if this lighting device is permanently installed.

Within the scope of the standard, special test conditions are specified for refrigerators and freezers with or without variable drive. These test conditions are described in section C 16. Thus, refrigerators and freezers with a variable drive are in Class D and all other appliances are in Class A.

Special test conditions also apply to dust and water extractors and arc welding equipment. The DKE / UK 767.1 entitled "Low-frequency conducted disturbances" is authoritative in this respect. It was published by the DKE - German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies.
